Bring Back Life Skills
Life skills are becoming a lost art
Home Education or Home Economics, also known as home ec., in school was dedicated to teaching students some very useful life skills. But was removed to make space for other courses in high school and middle school. As a result there are generations that lack those useful skills and are ridiculed for not knowing them though they were never taught. Students or young adults are now learning them later in life or never at all. I think these skills should be learned to help create successful adults in the real-world. They work in emergencies and in everyday life. Take a look at this article on how some young adults are choosing to cope. https://www.foxbusiness.com/money/college-students-turn-to-adulting-classes-for-basic-life-skills These are some specific skills I think would be most useful and may be the most important:
Sewing - Sewing is not a new trend. It has been around for a long long time and can come in really handy. Have a hole in your shirt? Quick fix. Just need a needle and thread. There are so many different ways to sew as well. You can make your clothes fit you perfectly without having to go to a professional tailor. You can even hem your own pants. Sewing is very handy and can help you spice up your clothes.
Cooking - This goes without saying. Food is fuel. And if you are struggling with food then learning to cook with help you take control of your health. It is even comforting for some people that enjoy doing the action itself. And who wouldn’t love to host a dinner party with delicious food they made themselves? And will definitely help save money by avoiding having to dine out.
Cleaning - There is a difference between organizing and cleaning. Putting things away is not fully cleaning. You have to get down and dirty for this one. But cleaning is using products, vacuuming, sweeping, scrubbing, and mopping to really get a room clean. It is not healthy to sit in dust and grime all day. And having a clean room makes anyone feel better. It is also very hygienic. Cleaning can prevent mold and clear bacteria that can get you sick. Just be careful to not mix chemicals.
Gardening - This one requires more space if you want to grow flowers or vegetables. But growing your own food can help you eat healthier and save some money even. It also teaches you to appreciate patience, hard work, and life. It also doesn’t hurt to get some sun and fresh air. Certain indoor plants can even clean the air and give some life to the room.
Changing a Tire - This is one of the most useful emergency skills to know. Their are potholes, screws, glass, etc. on the road that can always cause a flat tire. And random situations that can need the changing of a tire. But knowing how to do it yourself means you don’t have to wait for assistance or help on the side of the road. It also means that you can get yourself out of more unsafe situations like being stuck on a highway alone at night. It can also be a help to someone else if they can’t do it themselves and you can.
