Self-Branding and Self-Perception

Self-branding is the new way to make yourself a name. People have been trying their best to make names for themselves since the dawn of time. And some people are very successful at it. It has become very important in the digital age. Especially when it comes to social media. While social media and self-branding have now become hand-in-hand, it puts a lot of pressure on users. Self-branding is creating your image for others to see. In real life it can be how you carry yourself, how you dress, and how you speak even. But in the digital age it is about making your online self the best version of yourself. Forbes emphasizes the importance of self-branding on social media. “Creating a personal brand is about more than simply projecting an image of success and importance. To truly stand out from the crowd and succeed in today's competitive world, it is important to develop a personal brand that reflects who you are as an individual and what you have to offer.” (White, 2024). Forbes talks about how important self-branding is to stand out. But as they say it is not just about projecting an image. It will help you further and improve your life if it reaches the right people which most people are hoping for.

Self-perception is how you view yourself. How you think you come off to other and how you think of yourself. In social media it is easy to look at your account and think of how you come off to people and adjust accordingly. It is easy to change a profile picture, delete a post, add a link, or change your bio. But these things affect how you see yourself. It can be hard to change a negative mindset when you only think of yourself that way. And self-perception can hold a lot of power over your body, physically you can be affected. The National Library of Medicine published “The Importance of Self-Perceptions to Psychosocial Adjustment in Adolescents with Heart Disease” and they conducted a study on adolescents with and without heart disease, different types of heart disease, different living conditions, etc. Based on all the differing variables one of the results are ,”In this study, adolescents reported a higher incidence of internalizing behavior problems and lower health-related quality of life than normative samples. Positive self-perceptions regarding global self-worth, competence, and health were associated with better psychosocial adjustment.” (Mussatto et al., 2014). This means that having more positive self-perceptions really affects how you feel and act. If someone wants to change how they think of themselves in a positive way. It can be a switch in the right direction.

We know that social media holds a lot of power over people who value the opinions that come from it. But this focuses on what self-branding and self-perception really are. Read the next blog post to see more on specific effects and possibilities especially with recent updates with AI.
